How to Clear and Organize Your Desk

1. 01

   Empty the surface completely

   Take everything off the desktop, including the lamp and monitor, and pile it on a nearby table. Starting from a bare surface makes it obvious what has no real purpose.

   Clean while it is bare

   Dust and wipe the empty desktop right now. This is the only moment the whole surface is reachable, so it will never be easier to clean.

   Sort into three piles

   Sort every item into keep-on-desk, belongs-elsewhere, and toss. Be strict with the first pile: if you do not touch it daily, it moves to the second.

   Map your zones

   Decide where your hands naturally reach: writing space in the centre, tools on your dominant side, reference material on the other. Each zone gets a clear job.

   Keep only daily tools out

   Return one pen cup, one notebook, and the devices you use every single day. Duplicates and occasional supplies go into a drawer instead of on display.

   Give paper an inbox

   Place a single letter tray at the edge of the desk for anything needing action. It replaces the drifting piles that slowly spread across the whole surface.

7. 07

   Set a closing routine

   Spend two minutes at the end of each workday returning stray items to their zones. Tomorrow then starts with an empty desk instead of yesterday's leftovers.
