How to Tame Desk Cable Clutter

   Photograph before you unplug

   Shut the computer down and take a picture of the back of the desk while everything is still connected. That photo is your wiring diagram if a plug ends up unaccounted for.

   Pull everything and sort

   Disconnect every cable and divide them into keep, spare, and obsolete. Anything belonging to a device you no longer own goes straight into an e-waste bag.

   Test the unknowns

   Plug each unidentified cable into a phone, drive, or charger to confirm it still carries power or data. If it fails the test, it does not earn space in the drawer.

   Group by destination

   Bundle cables that travel to the same place, such as the monitor run, the charging run, and the printer run. Each group then needs one tie instead of five loose cords.

   Mount a tray underneath

   Screw an under-desk cable tray or raceway to the underside of the desktop and lay the bundles inside it. This keeps cords off the floor and away from your feet.

   Tie and route with slack

   Fasten each bundle with a hook-and-loop tie roughly every 30 cm, but leave a small service loop at both ends. Plugs should never hang under tension.

7. 07

   Label both ends

   Print a label naming the device each cable serves and stick one at the plug and one where the cord begins. Swapping hardware later takes seconds instead of guesswork.
