How to Declutter Your Kitchen Counter

   Clear Everything Off

   Take every item off the counter and pile it on the kitchen table or floor. Seeing the bare surface shows you how much working space you actually have.

   Sort Into Four Piles

   As you handle each item, drop it into keep-daily, keep-but-store, relocate, or donate. Anything you have not used in the past month belongs in the last two piles.

   Clean the Bare Surface

   Wipe the counter with a degreaser, then run a scraper along the silicone seam where the counter meets the backsplash to lift the grime hiding there.

   Keep Only the Daily Five

   Return just the items you touch every day, such as the coffee maker, knife block, and salt cellar. Cap it at five so the counter cannot creep back into clutter.

   Give the Keepers a Home

   Store the rest in the cabinet nearest to where you use it. A blender used for smoothies goes above the fruit bowl, not across the room.

   Redirect the Relocate Pile

   Walk the relocate items to their real home right now, and put the donate box in your car so it leaves the house within the week.

7. 07

   Set a Nightly Reset Rule

   Pick one time each evening to clear the counter back to its five items. A two-minute reset beats a monthly overhaul every time.
