How to Set Up a Toy Rotation System

   Pick a rotation cycle

   Decide how often you'll swap bins — every two weeks works for most families. Write the swap date on a calendar so it actually happens.

   Sort toys into categories

   Group everything into building toys, pretend play, vehicles, puzzles, and art. Keeping sets together means each bin offers a complete play experience.

   Divide into equal bins

   Split each category across three or four bins so every bin has a mix of active and quiet toys. Aim for one bin per child at a time.

   Label and store the rest

   Label each bin with a number or photo, then stack the out-of-rotation bins on a high shelf, in a closet, or under a bed where kids can't reach.

   Set out the current bin

   Place one bin on an open low shelf at your child's eye level. Fewer visible choices helps kids focus and makes putting toys away quick.

6. 06

   Swap and rotate

   On swap day, put the current bin away and bring out the next one. If a toy went untouched for two full cycles, donate it.
