How to Organize Your Garage Tools

   Empty everything onto a tarp

   Drag out every drawer, bucket, coffee can, and shoebox holding tools and spread the contents on a tarp in the driveway. Seeing the full pile at once is what makes the rest of this possible.

   Sort by type and by how often you use it

   Group the pile into hand tools, power tools, measuring and marking, cutting, and fasteners. Then split each group into weekly use, monthly use, and once-a-year use, because those three tiers belong in three different places.

   Cut duplicates and dead tools

   Set aside rusted, cracked, or doubled-up items, then test every power tool on an extension cord before it earns shelf space. Anything unrepaired or unused for three years goes to donation or scrap, which usually frees a third of your storage.

   Hang the weekly tools on a wall panel

   Mount a pegboard or slatwall within arm's reach of the bench and hang the tools you grab constantly: hammer, pliers, tape measure, utility knife, safety glasses. Trace each tool's outline in marker so a bare silhouette tells you instantly what walked off.

   Give power tools a shelf with charging

   Dedicate one shelf to drills, drivers, and saws, with a power strip mounted at the back so batteries charge in place. Keep each tool in its own slot or bin, with its battery, charger, and spare bits traveling together.

   Corral small parts in clear, labeled bins

   Move screws, anchors, drill bits, and blades into shallow clear bins sorted by type rather than by the container they came in. Label the front edge, not the lid, so you never have to pull a bin down to read it.

   Send seasonal and rare tools up high

   Pipe wrenches, tile saws, and specialty kits go on the top shelf or in a labeled lidded tote. Keep a written index taped inside the tote lid so you know what is up there without dragging the ladder out.
