How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

   Lock in a color palette

   Pick two neutral base colors (navy, grey, cream) plus two accent colors you already love wearing. Every piece you keep should pair with at least three others in the closet.

   Map your real week

   Write down how you actually spend seven days — office, gym, school run, weekends — then set a target count for each category based on those ratios. If you work from home four days, you need far fewer blazers than tees.

   Empty the closet onto the bed

   Pull everything out, including the stuff shoved behind the door. Anything unworn in 12 months, ill-fitting, or waiting on a repair you keep postponing goes into the donate or repair pile.

   Choose the core 30

   Select roughly 30 pieces for the season — tops, bottoms, outerwear, shoes. Test each one against your palette and confirm it covers at least one of your weekly scenarios.

   Fill only the real gaps

   Note what is missing to make the combinations work — a plain white tee, a neutral blazer, a pair of dark jeans. Shop for those specific gaps instead of browsing.

6. 06

   Store the overflow

   Move off-season and sentimental pieces into labeled bins out of the way. Keep only capsule pieces on the rod, all on the same style of hanger so the rack reads as one set.
